Surgical gowns are usually rated according to their AAMI level. AAMI has four levels of protection for surgical gowns:
Level 1: Used for the lowest risk exposure situations, such as providing basic care and gowns for visitors.
Level 2: Used for low-risk exposure situations, such as during ordinary blood drawing procedures and sutures.
Level 3: Used for medium-risk exposure situations, such as surgery and insertion of intravenous (IV) lines.
Level 4: Used for high-risk exposure situations, such as during long-term, high fluid intensity surgery.
Surgical gowns provide barrier protection to prevent blood shock and liquid contamination. Most surgical gowns are sterile and come in various sizes and materials. Surgical gowns can be purchased separately or in the surgical pack.
