Surgical gowns are usually rated according to their AAMI level. AAMI has four levels of protection for surgical gowns:

Level 1: Used for the lowest risk exposure situations, such as providing basic care and gowns for visitors.

Level 2: Used for low-risk exposure situations, such as during ordinary blood drawing procedures and sutures.

Level 3: Used for medium-risk exposure situations, such as surgery and insertion of intravenous (IV) lines.

Level 4: Used for high-risk exposure situations, such as during long-term, high fluid intensity surgery.
